Jan 10 2016

Whilst a Christian is a Christian because of a work of God in their life, the bible equally describes the necessity of a response on our part. This week we look at what a Christian is from the side of what we do.
Key Definition: A Christian is a faith-filled follower and believer in Jesus
Key Texts: John 1:12, Mark 1:14-15, Acts 11:26

Week 1 - Why? Why anything? Why are we here? |
4th Jan 2015
|
This week we considered two world-views and their response to this question. The limitations and implications of each perspective are explored. The Christian world-view, with life lived under God and for God provides the most consistent approach to answering why we are here.

This week we consider the deeply personal issues that may lie behind a difficulty to 'believe'. Whilst the issues are different for all, there seems to be some common factors, and a central issue which sits at the heart of the matter.

An understandable question given the suffering all around us and in our own lives - but a question that is faced by every world view and religion. Does God as revealed in the suffering Christ offer sufficient understanding and hope amidst inevitable pain?
Some quotes ...
Everything that we believe is filtered through our plausibility structures — belief-forming apparatus that acts as a gatekeeper, letting in evidence that is matched against what we already consider to be possible. Plausibility structures filter out claims that we believe cannot be reasonable or potentially true. They don't necessarily tell us if a claim is true, only that the truth of the claim appears plausible enough for us to accept and that we are not wholly unwarranted in thinking it could be true. Whether we are gullible or skeptical, the beliefs we accumulate are those that have been filtered through plausibility structures at the individual and cultural level. These eventually form our worldview, which itself becames a broad strainer that filters out beliefs that we won't even consider to be possibly true.
